Regional Environmental Network for Accession (RENA)

Financed by EU and managed by the European Commission, this project aims to facilitate the accession process to the EU and help the beneficiaries countries in exchanging information and experience related to their preparation for accession. It is follow up and successor of the “Regional Environmental Reconstruction Programme for South East Europe” (REReP). The initiative was thought under the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe (working from January 2000). In June 2007 Environment Ministers from Candidate and Potential Candidate Countries, together with the new Member States Bulgaria and Romania welcomed the EC initiative to replace REReP by RENA.

The key beneficiary institutions are as follows: ALBANIA - Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Water Administration, BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA - Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism, CROATIA - Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction, fYR of MACEDONIA - Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, KOSOVO under UN1244/99 - Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, MONTENEGRO - Ministry for Spatial Planning and Environment, SERBIA - Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, TURKEY - Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The project will be implemented through the activities of the following four Working Groups:

  • Working Group 1: Strategic Investments and Planning
  • Working Group 2: Climate Change
  • Working Group 3: Cross Border Cooperation and Multilateral Agreements
  • Working Group 4: Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network for Accession (ECENA)

Besides ministries and public authorities, RENA project involves regional civil society and opens space for participation of NGOs. Environment Forum project helps to facilitate involvement of NGOs in the work of the 4 Working Groups and follow up activities. For this purpose, the NGOs participating in the EF Project created 4 NGO Task Groups, which follow and cover RENA activities:
